We don't mean to point the finger, but this #manicule looks a little strange to us! It is one of many that a #reader has left in the #margins of our copy of ‘Libellus ysagogicus Abdilasi’, a #Latin translation of a 10th century work by the #astrologer Al-Quabisi. This edition was produced in #Venice in 1485 by the early German #printer Erhard Ratdolt and clearly found an enthusiastic owner. #maniculemonday #manicules #printing #marginalia #provenance #rarebooks #specialcollections #incunabula #earlyprintedbooks #astronomy
Today we commemorate Valentinus, Martyr at Rome, who died #OnThisDay in 269 AD. The saint's feast day became associated with courtly love during the high medieval period, and #ValentinesDay is now celebrated in many regions around the world. For #woodcutwednesday, two ornamental head-pieces from ‘Histoire générale de la Chine’, a late 18th century history of China based largely on the writings of the Confucian scholar, Xi Zhu (1130-1200). The book was printed in Paris as a monumental 13-volume set complete with hand-coloured maps of the country and decorated with these charmingly bucolic little scenes [B75.4/M87] #China #chinesehistory #countryside #rurallife #woodcut #woodcuts #history #rarebooks #printing #librariesofinstagram #specialcollections

Mary Queen of Scots was executed #OnThisDay in 1587. In 2008 Lambeth Palace Library purchased the only surviving contemporary copy of the royal warrant ordering her death. Robert Beale, Clerk to the Privy Council, was responsible for bearing the warrant to the commissioners who were instructed to “repair to our Castell of Fotheringhaye where the said queene of Scottes is in custodie and cause by your commaundement execution to be don uppon her person”. This copy, signed by Mary’s cousin Elizabeth I, was delivered by him to Henry Grey, 6th Earl of Kent, one of the two commissioners tasked with organising the #execution. It was accompanied by a covering letter which is also now part of the Lambeth collections.
