Today the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby and Mrs Caroline Welby marked the official beginning of #construction works for the new #library at #LambethPalace, with an #historic #groundbreaking #ceremony. As well as offering #prayers for the new library, the #Archbishop spoke of this as “an incredibly exciting moment. It marks the beginning of making sure that …“the second most important ancient library in Europe” … gets a proper home: a home where it can be looked after, and where scholars can come and it can be used properly.”. #LambethPalaceLibrary #ArchbishopofCanterbury @ww_architects #specialcollections #librariesofinstagram #ChurchofEngland #CoE #history #newbuilding

It is clearly time for another #ThrowbackThursday, so please enjoy this perfect parade of pugs from the early 1900s. Lambeth Palace Library holds the diaries and papers of Herbert Hamilton Maughan (1884-c.1979), an Anglo-Catholic priest and author of numerous books. His papers also include a collection of photographs of Herbert, his friends and family, including this 1908 image of Maughan’s mother, a champion breeder of #pugs! #Edwardian #ThrowbackThursday #pug #dogsinthelibrary #dogsofinstagram #dogsinthearchive #animalsinthrarchive #archiveanimals #dogs #photograph #photography #archivesofinstagram #librariesofinstagram #specialcollections
The early bird catches the… caterpillar? This wonderful woodcut initial can be found in a 17th century English translation of the The history of Polybius, published by Cornelius Bee in 1634. It is one of our favourites for #woodcutwednesday! [Sion B24.2/P76EG] #woodcut #woodcuts #rarebooks #birds #history #librariesofinstagram
Can you name the #animals depicted in this #lithograph from 1824? They are illustrated in Peter Schmidtmeyer’s Travels into Chile (B17.10/Sch5). Here’s a clue, the Latin name for this #creature is Myocastor coypus. #TuesdayTest #Wildlife #Nature #illustration #Chile #Travel #Andes #lithography #lithographic #colourprinting #printing #bookstagram #librariesofinstagram #specialcollections #LambethPalaceLibrary #Sion #rarebooks
Spot the #unicorn! Today is #NationalUnicornDay and one of the #mystical creatures is hidden in this #woodcut from Bartholomeus de proprietatibus rerum (L40.4/86) – an #incunable that was #printed around 1496 by Wynkyn de Worde in #Westminster. #MythicalMonday #MonsterMonday #WynkyndeWorde #incunabula #incunables #earlyprintedbooks #printing #bookhistory #rarebooks #specialcollections #LibrariesofInstagram #LambethPalaceLibrary #unicorns #flowers #trees #hills #nature #wildlife
