Today the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby and Mrs Caroline Welby marked the official beginning of #construction works for the new #library at #LambethPalace, with an #historic #groundbreaking #ceremony. As well as offering #prayers for the new library, the #Archbishop spoke of this as “an incredibly exciting moment. It marks the beginning of making sure that …“the second most important ancient library in Europe” … gets a proper home: a home where it can be looked after, and where scholars can come and it can be used properly.”. #LambethPalaceLibrary #ArchbishopofCanterbury @ww_architects #specialcollections #librariesofinstagram #ChurchofEngland #CoE #history #newbuilding

Lambeth Palace Library holds the diaries and papers of Herbert Hamilton Maughan (1884-c.1979), an Anglo-Catholic priest and author of numerous books. His papers also include a collection of photographs of Herbert, his friends and family, including this 1908 image of Maughan’s mother, a champion breeder of #pugs! #Edwardian #ThrowbackThursday #pug #dogsinthelibrary #dogsofinstagram #dogsinthearchive #animalsinthrarchive #archiveanimals #dogs #photograph #photography #archivesofinstagram #librariesofinstagram #specialcollections

It is one of our favourites for #woodcutwednesday! [Sion B24.2/P76EG] #woodcut #woodcuts #rarebooks #birds #history #librariesofinstagram
